i didn't write this, but @jackie_lucas might enjoy this for her birthday

The Swell Season covers Neutral Milk Hotel

[although she may need to watch it on her laptop]

um. pretty effing awesome. i mean, Neutral Milk Hotel covered by The Swell Season? thats a helluva' way to start off this morning. i would listen to an entire album of this.

country music

my friend Jonathon on Facebook just posted this quote, which i am stealing verbatim, because i concur with every word.

The problem with today's country music is that the singers just have too much to look forward to. Taylor Swift singing about heartbreak is about how boys should pay attention to her (not the pretty girls), while Hank Williams singing about heartbreak is about how his life is over and he's going to die. Hank Williams was better than anyone at convincing you that he's going to die alone in a ditch of alcohol poisoning.

bravo.

summer music

months back, when it was stupid cold, we talked about what constituted Winter Music. now that its no longer winter, and most definitely summer, lets talk about Summer Music. i'll take the easy way out and make a list! mostly alphabetical, as i'm going through my iTunes library at the same time!

  • anything Chet Atkins
  • The Little Willies (Norah Jones' brilliant little side project; check it out)
  • anything Hank Williams
  • Django Reinhardt
  • Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane (1957)
  • Justin Timberlake (what? don't give me that weird look)
  • James Brown
  • Otis Redding
  • really anything Motown
  • Jurassic 5
  • Allman Brothers
  • Beck: Guero, Guerolito
  • Bob Marley (cliché!)
  • Brian Wilson, SMiLE
  • Bruce Springsteen: Born to Run, Magic
  • anything Cake
  • CCR
  • Dave Matthews Band (cliché!)
  • Drive-By Truckers
  • Feist
  • Foo Fighters
  • Gin Blossoms
  • Hootie & the Blowfish
  • Jack Johnson (cliché!)
  • Jackson Browne
  • My Morning Jacket (although it borders on Fall Music)
  • Matthew Sweet
  • Neko Case
  • Nick Drake (another borderline Fall choice)
  • Parliament
  • Phoenix
  • The Police
  • R.E.M. (up until Automatic For the People; after that, maybe not so much)
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • Rolling Stones
  • Rooney
  • Starlight Mints
  • Talking Heads

ok, so thats a big list, probably with some unintentional omissions. what & who do you consider Summer Music?

that kinda' day

definitely the prototypical type of day for some Neon Bible (by Arcade Fire). the first time i listened to it, front to back, was on a bus from London to Cardiff. it worked well then, too.

now if you'll excuse me, i'ma be in the corner being all angsty and stuff.

Chris Cornell, Jerry Cantrell join Pearl Jam for Awesomeness in L.A.

yeah, audio quality is kinda' crap, but, uh... does it matter?

i posit: NO, it does not. this is just all sorts of incredible.
