House Season Finale Filmed Entirely with Canon 5D Mark II

The season finale of the popular TV show House, which will air on May 17th, was filmed entirely with the Canon 5D Mark II. cinema5D overheard the plan last month and Greg Yaitanes, the director of the show, has confirmed it through a tweet in which we made himself open to questions.

We’ll republish some of the interesting questions and answers here, interview style:

@MVRamunno: What is the difference in how it looks on a TV screen compared to a regular camera?

Greg Yaitanes: richer. shallow focus pulls the actors faces to forground [sic]

@oamad0101: How many frames per second and why a Canon 5D Mark II?

GY: 24p and wanted it for ease of use in tight spaces.

@unikissa: Ok, seriously. Can you tell us something about the lenses you used?

GY: all the canon primes and the 24-70 and the 70-200 zoom

@sarabury: Did you have to change any of your working practices to fit in with differences between the 5D and a typical setup?

GY: some. focus was hard with these lenses but more “cine-style” lenses are being made as we speak.

@marykir: were you using CF cards for storage or some sort of mass storage mod? seems like you would need a lot of cards :)

GY: some 18gb or something like that card. gave us 22 min of footage.

@Drdiagnostic: How was the quality as compared 2 the traditional camera used in shooting?

GY: i loved it and feel it’s the future. cameras that can give you these looks

@klizma: How did you manage to stabilize the camera in tight spaces? Any special kind of brackets?

GY: no. mostly gave it a hand held feel. or on a small tripod

This is quite an endorsement for Canon, with a network giant entrusting the finale of one of its most popular shows to the 5D Mark II (which happens to be the first digital camera to take the Presidential portrait as well).

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about the popularity of the show:

In 2008, House was distributed in a total of 66 countries. With an audience of over 81.8 million worldwide, it was the most watched television show on the globe and far surpassed the viewership figures of the leading TV dramas the previous two years

If you haven’t yet, check out the short film, The Last 3 Minutes, which we posted earlier today. It was filmed with the same camera.

its nice to know you're in good company, especially after seeing the D3s in action a couple days ago. yay 5D MII!

about LOST

tonight, Mr. M made an entry outlining why he's completely lost interest in LOST. part of it had to do with the writers/producers/creators setting an end date. thats what the first part of my response is about. the rest is more general. CONTAINS NO SPOILERS.

LOST + 24

most of you will fall into one of three camps...

  • you will NOT watch this and roll your eyes about how much LOST sucks now and you're just ready for it to end.
  • you will watch about three minutes, get bored, and move on to something a bit more culturally enlightened.
  • you will watch the whole thing, realize there's a scene towards the end that's "not canonical," crap your pants, and rewatch it. over and over again.
i'm in camp three. enjoy.

every now and then. someone somewhere will reference this ad and i'll wind up reminiscing about how awesome it is. so there. enjoy.

quick review

almost forgot this: "The Waters of Mars" was very good, and frightening... but for quite unexpected reasons.

very ready to see whats in store for the two-part Christmas specials.

YAPATO

[yet another post about The Office]

[yeah, welcome to this all-too-often recurring segment of my blogging life.]

i think the biggest problem i'm having with the show now is that i am having to force myself to "know" these aren't real people anymore, that they are huge, blown-out caricatures of "real people." when The Office began, everyone was believable to an extent with their quirks and sometimes bizarre behavior. its part of the reason why last night's episode is being deemed Worst Episode Ever: Andy dressed up as a mechanic? Dwight & Andy successfully convincing Michael the insurance thing was a Mafia operation? Kevin using Jim's office as a fart receptacle? these (to me, at least) are things just so far out of the realm of possibility that it just feels like the writers are trying to hard.

its not that i can't enjoy the absolute absurdity; its that i don't think i should turn my brain around to think "there is no way this is in any way possible," because that's not what the show was about when it first began (and not what the original Office was ever about). sure, situations were tweaked to an extent as to make things slightly ridiculous, but there was always a hint of truth, teetering on the edge of "well... i honestly could see that happening."

maybe its why i'm enjoying Parks & Recreation more than The Office these days: i knew from the start that the show was going to be redonkulous, even with its Office-esque documentary style.

my solution: let Jim & Pam have their baby by the season finale, then end the show, allowing NBC to give everyone a fond sendoff and good memories. we've already quit TiVoing one of our favorite shows this year (Medium's move to CBS has been an absolute, unequivocal disaster). i don't wanna see the day when we do the same for The Office.

thoughts?

R.I.P. Captain Lou Albano

whilst remembered for a huge variety of other things, this is the role that will always stand out most to me.

the Office wedding

initially, i thought there were some good, solid bits in here.

but the more i thought about it, the more it just felt kinda'... lazy. the Three Wolves t-shirt? that YouTube dance? i admit, i laughed at the Three Wolves shirt, but the YouTube wedding intro dance thing... ehhh...

i hope this season doesn't just spiral downward like season, although... i think now that the wedding is over, they should kill the show. done. that's it.
